He’s in the middle of nowhere, Alaska, because his Eskimo mother has moved home, and Cesar, a seventeen-year-old former gang banger, is convinced that he’s just biding his time ’til he can get back to LA. His charmingly offbeat cousin, Go-boy, is equally convinced that Cesar will stay. And so they set a wager. If Cesar is still in Unalakleet in a year, he has to get a copy of Go-boy’s Eskimo Jesus tattoo.<\/p>\n

Go-boy, who recently dropped out of college, believes wholeheartedly that he is part of a Good World conspiracy. At first Cesar considers Go-boy half crazy, but over time in this village, with his father absent and his brother in jail for murder, Cesar begins to see the beauty and hope Go-boy represents. The choice.<\/p>\n

This is a novel about a different Alaska than many of us have read about in the past, about a different kind of wilderness and survival. As Cesar (who later assumes his Eskimo name, Atausiq) becomes connected to the community and to Go-boy, the imprint he bears isn’t Go-boy’s tattoo but the indelible mark of Go-boy’s heart and philosophy, a philosophy of hope that emphasizes our similarities to one another as well as a shared sense of community, regardless of place. As Go-boy says to Cesar, “Sometimes we’re always real same-same.”<\/p>\n

Cesar, dix-sept ans, ancien membre de gang, se retrouve en Alaska, \u00e0 Unalakleet, o\u00f9 sa m\u00e8re d\u2019origine eskimo est rentr\u00e9e vivre. Persuad\u00e9 de n\u2019\u00eatre l\u00e0 que pour patienter avant de retourner \u00e0 LA, il se heurte \u00e0 son cousin Go-boy, original et attachant, convaincu que Cesar restera. Les deux gar\u00e7ons concluent un pari : si Cesar est encore au village dans un an, il devra se faire tatouer le motif eskimo de Go-boy. Ce dernier, qui a abandonn\u00e9 ses \u00e9tudes, croit faire partie d\u2019une conspiration du Bon Monde. D\u2019abord sceptique, Cesar voit peu \u00e0 peu, dans ce village o\u00f9 son p\u00e8re est absent et son fr\u00e8re emprisonn\u00e9 pour meurtre, la beaut\u00e9 et l\u2019espoir que repr\u00e9sente Go-boy. Le roman explore une autre Alaska, faite de communaut\u00e9 et de solidarit\u00e9. Devenu Atausiq, son nom eskimo, Cesar s\u2019attache aux habitants et \u00e0 son cousin, et ce qui le marque n\u2019est pas le tatouage mais la philosophie de Go-boy : \u00ab Sometimes we\u2019re always real same-same \u00bb.<\/p>\n
